The story concerns a young girl, Dorothy Gale—which means strong wind—who lives in a dusty farming community with her surrogate parents. She is whisked away (complete with house and dog Toto) by a tornado and lands in the imaginary country of Oz. Her landing kills the Wicked Witch of the East from whom she acquires a pair of shoes. Her one quest now is how to get home. Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (who lives on the red road) suggests Dorothy go to Emerald City. Baum has Dorothy travelling along the yellow brick (gold bars) road in silver shoes—ruby shoes in the film—intent on reaching Emerald (greenback) City. The analogy in the book seems to be about the economically disputed qualities of gold standard, silver coins and paper currency. For L the concern is related much more to the pathway to neo-liberalist, market economy and the fractures this entails economically and mentally.
