On and off continuously, in rhythm. When one lamp goes off and the neighbouring lamp goes on at the next moment, there is no zero state of darkness because the reverberation of the last light is a bridge to the lighting of the next. An early light installation had the title: Before and After follow each other. These “switch pieces”, sculptures, in which the factor of time is of the essence, made the young Canadian internationally known in the early 90s. Again and again, Angela Bulloch has staged on/off situations using light and sound that appear both succinct and magic at the same time. The two light globes are fitted with light pink 60 watt bulbs, and are accompanied by a very precise description of their functioning: “The light switches from one sphere to the other at regular intervals. To switch between 2-4 seconds adjust the variable knob at the switching mechanism.” The spheres should be hung at a height of 166cm from the floor and 34cm out of the corner of the room. “The spheres must touch each other.”
