Whereas Pink Switch Corner Piece is concerned with an on/off situation and the impossibility of simultaneity, the new work marks a decisive development. The floor sculpture consists of two modular monitors and a blackbox. It is an enlarged pixel system which has been programmed to produce an almost infinite number of colours.
On the module on the left, the four-minute sequence loops from cyan to magenta, on the one on the right, from red to green. Some of Bulloch’s pixel works react to movement, some to pressure. The monitors show the digital transformation of analogue processes. The artist concerns herself with the workings of human brain, its nerve cells and neuro-transmitters in surprising ways. The sculpture documents a complex interplay of perception; on the one hand, there is technical experience, and on the other, an intensively visual one. “What motivates me,” says the artist, “is recycling and reforming. What is important are the differences, the dynamics, and the relationship between things.” And the idea that a work only exists in the viewer’s experience of it.
