Nedko Solakov is a storyteller. He lives and works in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria far from any trendy art metropolis. He is interested in the small ironies in life and makes fun of himself and his status as an internationally successful artist with passion and wrath. One work he shows at important biennals and in the great exhibition spaces of the world is concerned with an inventory of European history and stories, and evinces autobiographical features time and again.
Domestic Limits from 1998 consists of Object A, Object B and a video film. Both objects are balls of cotton thread, transparent plastic sheeting, chewing gum, amethysts, Bulgarian newspapers, material, dough, face mask and aluminium foil. The film shows Solakov’s wife, Slava Nakovska, making the sculptures; the materials mentioned are formed into balls in the same way but each in the opposite order – an extremely poetic parable about limitations and the consolations of private domesticity.
