Test Cards are templates for image samples, including the famous, now almost never seen, television test images. Cécile B. Evans works with terms from telecommunication, media technology, and the digital world. Her works often show machines embedded in realistic contexts that trigger or convey emotions. The robots in Test Card I stand in an abandoned factory hall and communicate with one another. "I am your understudy," the cute little one says, while another robot is standing already bent-over and functionless on the periphery. The work addresses urgent, contemporary concerns – automation, digitalization, replaceability. With the presentation of a simple plot, the artist gives us the opportunity to contemplate. From a distance and through communication, complex psychological processes become clearer.
