For his evn collection wallpaper Marko Lulić looked to familiar forms. People born in the 20th century will recognize them as patterned rollers from a house painter’s inventory. The rollers are dipped in paint, and when applied, their high relief leaves traces of the decoration on the surface of the wall – an analogue printing process for beautifying one's home. In many of Marko Lulićs other works, one looks in vain for the ornate. The symbolic is very much a theme in his work, often in the context of the visual language of politics. Only at first glance, the wallpaper lacks these social references. And yet the presentation of a simple tool in front of a bluebox-like background symbolizes the connection between economy, craftsmanship and the individual. The fact that the artist's parents ran a painting business for many years is here not just a biographical detail, but shows the importance of embedding artistic production in a socio-economic and cultural context.
